A Tory councillor has been slammed by a blogger for wearing sandals while campaigning in East Kilbride.
Tory councillor and East Kilbridges Council candidate Robyn Hughes said she was wearing the footwear as a political sign of support for her campaign.
She told the West Kilbrides Examiner newspaper: “I wore the sandals today on the way to campaigning.”
I did it as a sign of solidarity with those campaigning in the constituency.
“The campaign began in February when the council voted to allow all council candidates to wear sandals.
Tories leader John Reid, who is running for mayor, said: “In recent weeks we have seen a growing trend of young people in the party wearing sandal-type footwear and I think this is very disappointing.”
It’s also disappointing that a councillor from this constituency has chosen to make a political statement by wearing sand boots in public.”
The West Kilbridged councillor said she wore the footwear to highlight the issues of poverty and inequality and said she believed the party should be focused on getting the people of the constituency elected.
She said:”This is about putting a face on what’s happening in the country.”
The majority of the people in this constituency have seen very little change in the past three or four years.
“And I want to make sure we can get the people back to work.”
A spokesman for East Kilbristys council said the council had not received any complaints about the footwear.
